As I reflect on my first month of blogging, I can’t help but feel a mixture of excitement, exhaustion, and accomplishment. It’s been a whirlwind of writing, designing, researching, and fine-tuning, but it’s been worth every moment. From drafting the foundational pages to publishing my initial posts, I’ve learned more about the art of blogging and the business of content creation in the past month than I could have imagined or have learned from reading others’ journeys.

In this post, I’m going to take you through the journey of building my blog from the ground up, sharing the work involved in creating the pages, writing the content, dealing with redesigns, and tracking my progress with views and ad income. If you’re thinking about starting a blog or are in the early stages like I am, I hope this post can serve as a guide and help you avoid some of the challenges I faced along the way.

Setting Up the Foundation: Pages, Design, and Layouts

One of the first things I did after deciding to start a blog was focus on the foundational structure of the website. At first, I didn’t have a clear vision of exactly what the final product would look like, but I knew I wanted to make it clean, easy to navigate, and appealing to my target audience. I spent hours exploring different themes, trying to decide which one would best reflect the content I wanted to create.

Once I picked a theme, I focused on the three essential pages I needed to set up the blog:

  1. About Me Page: This was one of the most important pages for me, as it serves as the introduction to my blog and provides context for why I’m writing about topics like investing, budgeting, and family life. Crafting this page took some time because I wanted it to feel personal and welcoming. I made sure to share a bit about my background and why I’m passionate about the subjects I’m writing on.
  2. Contact Page: Setting up a way for readers and potential collaborators to get in touch with me was a priority. The contact page was relatively simple to create, but it was essential to establish this communication channel early on.
  3. Home Page: As I started adding content, I also spent time thinking about the layout of my homepage. I wanted it to be clean and easy to navigate while showcasing my latest posts and popular content. I experimented with different designs and layouts before landing on one that felt right.

This whole process of setting up the pages and creating the initial design took several days and a fair amount of trial and error. It was a lot of work, but it paid off in the end as I now have a functional, user-friendly site that feels professional.

Writing My First Posts: Finding My Voice and Staying Consistent

Once the foundational pages were in place, it was time to focus on creating content. My goal was to publish at least 5 posts before I launched my site to ensure there was sufficient blogs to read while I was drafting more, which I was able to accomplish. The topics I chose to write about ranged from investing and budgeting tips to more personal posts about family life and managing finances as a parent.

The easiest and hardest to write was the Pilot Article as I felt it had to be a combination of an introduction and previews to what the blog would be about.

I quickly realized that writing for a blog is different from writing other forms of content. You have to consider not only the value of the information but also how to engage readers and keep them interested. I spent a lot of time researching, outlining, and drafting each post. There were definitely some challenges along the way:

  • Finding My Voice: Early on, I struggled with how formal or informal I should be in my writing. I wanted my blog to be approachable and conversational, but I also wanted to sound knowledgeable and professional. Over time, I found a balance between the two and started developing a writing style that feels true to who I am.
  • Consistency: Publishing content consistently is one of the hardest aspects of blogging. Life often gets in the way, and there were days when I felt like I was falling behind. However, I made it a point to set a schedule for myself and stay committed. Getting ahead and creating a blog post calendar which forecast out a week really helped.
  • SEO and Readability: At first, I didn’t fully understand the importance of SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and how to optimize my posts for search engines. This meant that a lot of my early content didn’t perform as well as it could have. I’ve since learned more about keyword research, optimizing titles and meta descriptions, and structuring my posts to be more search-engine friendly. I am still learning and continue to improve in this area as time goes on.

Despite these challenges, I’m proud to say I Published 19 posts, each of which covers different aspects of personal finance, Real Estate, and motivation. It feels good to have a variety of content on my blog already, and I’ve noticed that the posts on budgeting and investing tend to resonate most with readers.

Below are some of the Best and Worst performing Blog Articles for the month.

The Top Blog Article for the month was “Building Passive Income Through Dividend Stocks”  Which saw 233 views during the month!

The Worst performing article for the month was “Reviving the American Dream: Steps to Attain It.” which saw only 2 Views! Come on people!

Redesigns and Adjustments: Tweaking for Better User Experience

After publishing a few posts, I realized there were some aspects of my blog’s design that could be improved. While the overall theme was fine, I felt that the site could use a bit more personality and visual appeal to match the content. I also received some feedback from friends and early readers who suggested a few tweaks.

One of the first things I did was adjust the navigation menu to make it easier to find key sections of the site. I reorganized the categories and added a sidebar that highlights my most popular posts and provides an easy way for visitors to find related articles.

Additionally, I played around with color schemes and fonts to create a more cohesive aesthetic. I wanted the site to feel welcoming without being overwhelming. The visual changes were subtle but made a noticeable difference in the overall feel of the blog.

Overall, while my blog’s design isn’t perfect, it’s a work in progress. I know that there will be more redesigns and adjustments as I continue learning, and that’s part of the fun of blogging.

Tracking Progress: Page Views and Ad Income

One of the most exciting aspects of blogging for me has been tracking my progress. While I’m still in the early stages, I’ve been keeping a close eye on my analytics to see how my content is performing and where I can improve.

In my first month, I managed to reach just under 1000 page views. (1,002 to be exact) While I know this isn’t an astronomical number by blogging standards, I’m really happy with the result, especially considering I didn’t have an established audience to start with. Gaining 1000 views feels like a solid accomplishment for someone just starting out.

In terms of ad income, I earned just under $2.00 in the first month. Again, this isn’t a huge sum, but it’s a start. It’s proof that the monetization aspect of blogging is possible, even at a small scale. I’m excited to see this number grow over time as my traffic increases and I experiment with different ad placements and strategies.

Advertising and Sharing my Content

The hardest, most frustrating, and confusing part of launching a blog has been fighting for VIEWS. Period. Unless you had previous online ventures or social media experience, you will find it a daily fight to engage with and seek out page viewers. I understand that as a new site, most people in the word don’t know you exist. However, I also learned that even with a “good” traffic day, that can be followed up by the lowest day.

After the first 3-weeks, I decided to launch a Facebook page dedicated and linked to the blog. I believed this would increase my reach to potential readers and offer another means to advertise my content.

I also joined Quora. This was another means to advertise my site but It also provided me another outlet to write and publish shorter content. Additionally, some of the questions I engage with there daily have inspired my site’s blog content and even led to the Newest section on my Blog being Launched this month. Weekend Web Warriors – Which is a weekly Q&A section.

Looking Ahead: Goals for Next Month

Looking forward, my goal for next month is to hit 1200 page views and $2.50 in ad income. These goals are small but realistic, and I’m excited to challenge myself to reach them. To get there, I plan to:

  1. Publish More Content: Consistent posting is key to growing my traffic. I plan to write at least 5 new posts next month to keep the momentum going.
  2. Improve SEO: I’ll continue to learn more about SEO and implement what I’ve learned into my posts to improve their visibility.
  3. Promote My Content: I’m going to focus more on promoting my blog on social media and other platforms to attract more visitors.
  4. Experiment with Ads: I’ll play around with different ad formats and placements to increase my earnings. While I know this will take time, I’m eager to see how small changes can lead to better results.

Final Thoughts

All in all, my first month of blogging has been a learning experience filled with growth, frustration, and triumph. I’ve made progress, but I also know there’s a lot of work ahead. Whether it’s perfecting my writing, improving my site’s design, or growing my traffic, I’m excited about what the future holds.

If you’re thinking about starting a blog, my advice is to jump in and start. Don’t worry about making everything perfect from the get-go. It’s a journey, and you’ll learn as you go. And remember, small wins – like hitting 1000 page views – are worth celebrating!

Here’s to the next month of blogging!
